Security Introduction

With PDF reDirect Professional, you can create the following:

  • A   40 bit encrypted PDF file (less secure, but works with PDF Reader v4 and above)

  • A 128 bit encrypted PDF file (more secure, but works with PDF Reader v5 and above)

You may wish to create secure PDF files for the following reasons:

  • A lawyer who needs to e-mail a document to his client or to the courts as evidence.

  • Sending proprietary company data to an employee on the road.

  • A doctor's medical report being sent between two hospitals.

  • etc.

How does it work?

  • Your recipient will only be able to view the PDF file if he provides the correct password (that you set).

  • Additionally, you can "Lock" the PDF File to prevent the reader from Editing, Printing, Accessing embedded files, or "copy and paste" text.

How do I...

Notes:

  1. The encryption algorithm used is within the export limits set by the United States Government.

  2. No encryption is ever completely foolproof and could be resolved, with time, by an organization with sufficient computing power. You can increase the security of the file by using long passwords and by including numbers or special characters (such as @#!%). Avoid words which can be found in a dictionary as that makes it easier for someone to crack the password during a brute force attack. Finally, be careful on how you give the password to your recipient. For example, do not include the password in the same e-mail that contains the PDF file!

Set the MASTER PASSWORD

Step 1

Password Definition

  • Document (User) Password This is the password used to encrypt the PDF. It will prevent any person who does not know this password from opening and reading the PDF.

  • Master Password This is an additional password which should only be used only by the person who created the PDF file. This allows the owner to open a PDF file in a PDF editor and make changes in the future. This password should never be shared.

Step 2

Setting the Master Password

  1. Open the "Preferences" Window

  2. Click on the "Security" button

  3. Enter the Master Password and click on "OK"

Notes

  • You only need to do this once (if you plan on always using the same Master Password)

  • You cannot encrypt or lock a PDF file until you have set the Master Password.

  • The User Password and the Master Password cannot be the same.

This is known as the "User Password". Note: you must set the "Master Password" first before encrypting a PDF file.

Step 5

Lock the PDF (optional). See next section to Lock a PDF.

Step 6

Step 4

Save, Upload or E-Mail the File(s).

  • The PDF File does not need to be encrypted in order to lock it.

  • Anyone who opens the PDF file will not be able to save, print, copy-and-paste or access the attachments (unless he or she has the Master Password)

  • For additional "copy-and-paste" protection, you can also use "Secure Text"
