I've never had this issue before, but in trying to merge two separate (one page each) PDF files together, I get an error message" An error occurred. The PDF file was not created properly."

Anyone have an idea of what is causing the error? How to solve it?

Hello,

I am going to guess that at least one of the PDF contains a scanned page. Some older Canon, Xerox and HP scanners can generate "malformed" PDF files. The scanned documents tree contains an error which the PDF Reader accepts readily, but my PDF management code generates an error.

The easiest fix is to upgrade to the latest version (v2.5.4 beta) of PDF redirect. This version has a new PDF management system which is likely to have addressed the problem you are describing. You can download this new version from here:
http://www.exp-systems.com/forum_exp/forum_posts.asp?TID=1142

Although this version is a “beta”, we have not had any reports of issues by our testers.

Here is an alternative to the upgrade. What you can do is to "reprint" your scanned PDF files to remove the errors as follows:

PDF reDirect Freeware and Pro users
1.     Open your scan in Adobe's PDF Reader
2.     Select to print, and choose to print to the PDF reDirect printer.
3.     Merge as required.

Here is an another way for PDF reDirect Pro users only (this may be faster):
1.     Open PDF reDirect Pro
2.     Click the scanned PDF once so that it appears in the Preview box (lower RHS).
3.     Click the small printer icon in the Preview header: this will use the built-in “print” feature to print the scans back to PDF reDirect Pro.
4.     The recreated PDF file will appear in the Merge list
5.     Now you can then save or merge with other files.

To prevent the problem when scanning new documents
1.     Insert the document you wish to scan into your scanner.
2.     Using your scanner's software, select to "Scan-to-print" or "send-to-printer" (or similar).
a.     if your scanner does not have that feature, you can use the freeware program called "iCarbon" which does the same thing.
b.     Here is a link: http://icarbon.en.softonic.com/
3.     Select the PDF reDirect printer to create the PDF

    I hope this helps.

The new version solved this problem... thanks for the fast and thorough response. (The two files I wanted to merge were, in fact, scanned images.)
