I have been a happy and contended user of PDF Direct for some time and had even started recommening it to others but yesterday for some unexplained reason it stopped working.Cry

The telling message in the log file I have created is:
"Failed to Find Capture's Comm Channel" Confused

If I try to preview a PDF file where the preview used to appear is a square box with the message Preview Not Available. Ouch

Other times if I try and print from say a Word document (Even happens from Notepad) a box pops up saying that the installation is corrupt but numerous re-installs even Windows XP Restore to dates when I know PDF ReDirect was working do not fix the problem.

There are times when the uninstall does not remove Capture.exe and some .dll's so I have used Task Manager to end the Capture process and then deleted these bits manually before doing the re-install but all to no avail.

CutePDF still works and the two Utilities have co-existed for some time so I can't think what has changed to upset PDF ReDirect.

Any help and advice would be very much appreciated. Smile

Regards,

Les.

Hi,

Wow. Sorry to hear of the problem. I say "wow" because I have not heard anyone report this problem before. PDF reDirect.exe contains the user interface, and Capture.exe does all of the computing hard work in the background. This configuration allows me to keep the user interface responsive for the user.

Somehow, it looks like the two programs are not talking to each other. Communication is being done through a communication (callback) library called "cbak4exp.dll", so first, I would check if that file has gone missing, or has become corrupted.

Because that library is not registered, the Windows "rollback" feature will not work.

My best bet advice would be to re-install PDF reDirect (it is OK to install over the current installation). I would also recommend that you take the opportunity to upgrade to the latest version which is v2.1.912, the release candidate version in preparation for the official v2.2 release. So far, I have not heard of any bugs from the test team, and have found a very minor one from one user which will be fixed shortly - you probably will not even notice it.

It is available on the main download page [here].

Let me know what happens: if it fixes the problem or not. If not, we can try troubleshooting further.

    Best regards,

Hi Michel,

Thanks for the rapid response. Smile

I have just done a Start -> Search for cbak4exp.dll and there is is sitting in C:\Program Files\PDF reDirect just as it should be. The file information is: Delphin Software Version 1.0.0.2 dated 08/01/2002 at 3:49 with a size of 5.50 KB. Confused

There is no milage in another re-install. I have done more than I can remember including deleting everything in C:\Program Files\PDF reDirect manually and then the PDF reDirect folder itself before some re-installs all to no avail. I have even re-extacted the installer from the zip I downloaded and that is just the same. Confused

Is there anything in the registry worth deleting before a re-install. I am not averse or unfamiliar with an edit or three in there! Wink

Maybe I will try removing Adobe CutePDF and PDF Creator and see if this makes any difference.

I am in a process of evaluation in order to make a recommendation of the way to go at work. We have been using CutePDF for a long time and it is very stable but its features are limited. I cannot even evaluate its Companion because neither the Virus scanner at work or at home will let me install it! So that's a shot in the foot for them.

PDF Creator the GNU offering is flaky being subject to the need for more than occasional re-installs whereas until yesterday PDF reDirect appeared rock solid and was favourite.  Smile

We do some minor "programmimg" mainly for simple in-house utilities and I have been dabbling with MS cscript.exe amd prnmngr.vbs to list and set default printers but this was all working a treat with PDF reDirect and CutePDF and still is with the latter. I recall that when PDF ReDirect first played up it was  shortly after changing the PDF Save option from over-write without asking to ask first that the problem surfaced. This may be nothing to do with it but it was after this change that's for sure.

I will let you know if I find a fix.

Regards,

Les.

Hi Michel,

I have had one of those Eureka moments today!  Big%20smile

Now are you sitting confortably because I have a tail to tell that just might demand some attention to where double quotes are used with the likes of "C:\Program Files" where there is a space in the name!

I thought I was looking at an fdisk and XP Pro re-install with the oddity I was experiencing with PDF reDirect because having run an ultra clean install with your Install_PDFR_v21912.exe, PDF reDirect was no better, still got the box saying No Preview Available. Thumbs%20Down

I then went to over-haul the registry with RegCleaner and it grumbled about not being able to write its log file to C:\Program Files! Unhappy

Suffice to say I am writing my own installer in DOS batch, for an old DOS FORTRAN Program I wrote years ago, which I turn into a setup.exe with a batch to exe compiler.

Yes I know there are better ways but I am too lazy to learn them. Ermm

I pondered RegCleaner's dilema and what you said about your programs appearing to not talk to each other and a message I had after one of the Restores namely on the first login I got a message from Windows XP that the directory C:\Program had been found that may cause some problems. Rename to C:\Program1 or Ignore. I had tried both routes eventhough I could never see a directory C:\Program or C:\Program1 only C:\Program Files. Confused

It occurred to me that maybe PDF reDirect was failing  because it wanted to access C:\Program Files but was seeing only C:\Program instead! Convoluted and bizarre and no matter how I searched the MS Knowledge base nothing showed up about the message at login that I was encountering, although with Google I did find one other soul posting about this message. I gather he ended up re-installing XP.

Having slept on the matter and enjoyed the English sunshine in my garden this morning for an hour or so, I went in and booted up in Safe mode to the DOS prompt. A good old fashioned dir showed me the offending "directory", now named C:\Program1, I guess by one the options I was offered after logging in following one of a number of Restores yesterday.

Program1 was in fact a file not a directory and a look in it with good old fashioned DOS Edit revealed a line that I recognised as resulting from a bit of careless batch programming, well if you like finger trouble of the polite variety. I would blame it on my advancing years but my programming was never quite right first time when I was younger I have to admit.

Another good old fashioned del Program1 got rid of this file and the reboot proved normal.

After another nice clean install with your Install_PDFR_v21912.exe, PDF reDirect was working again. Thumbs%20Up

What do you make of this Question

Maybe I have managed to stave off the fdisk for a little while longer what do you think?

PDF reDirect is back in favour you will no doubt be pleased to know. Big%20smile

Regards,

Les.

Les,

No worries. I have done far worse in the past. I enjoyed reading your story, particularly the bit about sleeping over on a problem (which I find does help) and the reference to the English sunshine - which I thought was a rare occurence. Smile

Although, I will say that my sister lives in London, and my visits there have been blessed with gorgeous weather.

The offending "Program1" file is indeed very odd that it affected the communication between the two programs. For example, the log shows it both of my programs properly recognizing the path to "Program Files", and the printer was successfully starting Capture.exe.

But, I am thankful for the mystery getting solved through your incredible tenacity: I have seen a number of problems get fixed in mysterious ways, and sometimes, it is just not worth the time and effort in trying to resolve the why.

Good luck with the remainder of your testing. I hope that the rest of it will go better, and thank you for providing the update to close the loop on the forum: it was much appreciated.

    Cheers!
